Abstract

In the fifteen years of our social-pedagogical work in special education classes at Fran Franković Elementary School Rijeka with students with learning difficulties, we have identified certain obstacles they encounter in their development.
After finishing their education in regular high schools, they mostly remain unemployed, spend more time at home, go out less, and become more socially isolated, relying on their families for care. Their involvement in the mentoring program has helped them bridge or at least alleviate these
challenges. After three years of participating in the “Friends” mentoring program, they feel more satisfied and integrated into society and the local community than before. It is essential to continue promoting and developing mentoring programs for individuals with difficulties to enhance their
employment opportunities and to ensure more meaningful and higher-quality leisure time.
