Instructions for authors are available here in PDF or below.
Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology is an international peer-reviewed open-access online journal founded in 2007. It has been continuously publishing papers in bioanthropology, bioarchaeology, paleodontology, forensic dentistry, and related fields since then. Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology is a journal powered by the enthusiasm of individuals. We do not charge readers, we do not charge authors for publications, and there are no fees of any kind if these instructions are followed. We support the idea of free science for everyone. Support the journal by submitting your high-quality papers.
Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology welcomes all contributions that enhance or illuminate bioarchaeological sciences. Our special interest lies in ancient teeth and the mouth. The journal publishes papers and fosters discussion on a wide range of research problems, e.g., methodology and methods of bioarchaeological and bioanthropological research, including field and laboratory study techniques, information technologies, bioarchaeological reconstruction, human evolution, etc. The journal also publishes results of field investigations conducted by bioarchaeologists, anthropologists, osteologists, forensic anthropologists, and forensic dentists, as well as announcements of symposia and professional meetings. The goal of this journal is to provide authors with an international forum for presenting their materials and ideas.
Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology features these types of articles: original scientific papers (this type of paper has the highest priority when selecting papers for publication), reviews (in principle, they are published at the invitation of the editor-in-chief), case reports, preliminary communications, letters to the editor, and book reviews. All papers considered for publication must be original and must not have been previously published in other journals. All works pass an artificial intelligence (AI) check and a plagiarism check. If it is determined that the works were written by artificial intelligence or that they are plagiarized, the papers will be rejected without further explanation.
Instructions for publishing articles in Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology (www.paleodontology.com) are made in accordance with the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors – Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (www.ICMJE.org).
Journal management of the Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology is performed by Open Journal Systems (OJS).
Manuscripts should be submitted in the English language only. Papers are reviewed by independent experts in their fields. Before submitting a manuscript, please read our Instructions for authors (this document), Review policy, and Ethics policy available at: https://ojs.srce.hr/index.php/paleodontology/information/authors. Any non-observance of these instructions may lead to the rejection of the paper without the need for further explanations.
Before submitting a manuscript, you should fill out the Submission checklist online form available HERE.
Papers for which this online checklist has not been completed prior to submission cannot be considered for publication. The form is filled out by the corresponding author. By submitting a paper, the author(s) accept all terms and conditions of the journal.
Classification of manuscripts
Manuscripts published in Bulletin of the International Association for Paleodontology are classified as: original scientific papers, reviews, case reports, letters to the editor, book reviews and meetings reports. The author should indicate the type of article at the beginning of the paper.
Language
Manuscripts should be submitted in the English language. Authors are responsible for language correctness and content. All authors are encouraged to hire a professional to review and edit their English before submitting the paper. Manuscript has been 'spell checked' and 'grammar checked'.
Authors
Papers with up to eight authors are acceptable (a larger number of authors is permitted only with the prior explanation and permission of the editor-in-chief). All required information must be provided for all authors in the Open Journal Systems (OJS). Adding authors at a later date is not possible. Due to the limited number of papers that can be published per volume, priority is given to papers by different authors.
Text setup
All submissions may have up to 15 pages (including the title page, text, figures, tables, references, etc.), with a font size of 12 (Times New Roman). All figures and tables should be placed at the end of the document after references. All submissions should be in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format. Use as little text and table formatting as possible. Text should be in a single column. Please, take a look at some of the articles published in the last issue to see how the text is organised. Footnotes are not acceptable.
Text components
Title (up to 150 characters including spaces; without capital letters except in the case of names), full names of the authors are to be stated by first name and then by family name. Author’s affiliations are indicated by a number in a rounded bracket (please do not use superscript or similar) at the end of each name and stated after the list of authors (department, institution, university, city, country). The address for correspondence of the corresponding author must include the name, postal address and email address. Title page and author details should be an integral part of the manuscript. Please, take a look at some of the articles published in the last issue to see how the text is organised.
The abstract should be up to 1200 characters, including spaces. After the abstract, there should be two to five keywords (separated by semicolons) that are essential for identifying and classifying the article's contents and will help in the composition of the descriptor. They should be written in lower case unless they are names. NLM descriptors can be found on: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html.
The introduction should present a concise, plain overview of the problem and the research objective. Papers directly related to the problem elaborated in the article should be briefly mentioned.
The Materials and Methods implemented in the work should be presented briefly but detailed enough to enable the reader to repeat the described research. This chapter should be structured in three parts. 1) Procedures are shown according to the chronological order of their implementation; 2) Exact description of materials (samples); 3) Statistical procedures applied in the result analysis.
Results should be presented clearly and precisely, without any additional comments or comparisons. All figures and tables should be referenced in text as tables or figures only (e.g. Figure 1 or Table 1) and placed at the end of the document.
The discussion is a part of the paper that gives the author the freedom to provide an overview and compare his own results with those of similar studies published in the past.
The conclusion is a separate chapter of the paper, brief and concise. It follows the discussion and extracts the research's most important conclusions.
Tables and figures
The table should be made in Microsoft Word and should be placed at the end of the manuscript (after References and before Figures), not inside the text. Keep the tables as simple as possible. The tables should be numbered in ordinal numbers that correspond to the text. Tables' titles are written above the tables. Example: “Table 1. Title of the table.” Please do not forget to place a dot after the table number and at the end of the table title.
Charts, photos, diagrams, x-rays and other images are all considered figures. Each figure must have an ordinal number related to the order of appearance inside the text. Each figure must also have a title placed below the image. Example: “Figure 1. Title of the figure.” Please do not forget to place a dot after the figure number and at the end of the figure title. All figures should be placed at the end of the manuscript, after tables (if any), not inside the text. Only high-quality figures will be accepted for publication. Reproduction of the photos is not allowed without attribution to the author. The paper should include a reasonable number of tables and figures (a total of 10). Written permission must be obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet). The authors are responsible for any possible copyright issues.
Declaration of interest
All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Authors must disclose any interests at the end of the manuscript, after the Conclusion section and before the reference list or author contributions statements (if any). If there are no interests to declare, then please state this: 'Declarations of interest: none'.
Author contributions
If there are two or more authors, contributions of each author must be specified at the end of the manuscript, after the Declaration of interest section, following the CRediT taxonomy guidelines at https://credit.niso.org/.
Statement on the use of artificial intelligence in manuscript preparation
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in preparing manuscripts is strictly limited. Any use of AI must be transparently and explicitly disclosed, including a clear description and proper citation of the AI tool employed. AI may be used solely for language editing, stylistic refinement, or proofreading, and not for generating substantive content. Authors must precisely specify which AI tool was used. All submitted manuscripts are subject to AI-detection screening, and manuscripts found to rely predominantly on AI-generated content may be rejected from consideration for publication without further explanation. This AI statement should be placed after the Authors' contributions section and before References.
References
Literature used in the paper should be indicated in Arabic numbers in the order of appearance and quoted in the paper in rounded brackets. If references are given at the end of a sentence, they should be placed in brackets before the full stop, not after the full stop. It should be cited according to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (www.ICMJE.org), also known as the Vancouver style. Abbreviations of the journals' titles are used according to MEDLINE/PubMed. All references mentioned in the Reference List should be cited in the text, and vice versa.
