Abstract

This study employs an integrated geophysical approach to investigate the crustal structure and tectonic framework of Java Island, Indonesia, through the analysis of earthquake focal mechanisms, gravity anomalies, stress distribution, and seismic reflection profiles. Seismicity data from 2000–2023 reveal a seismic gap in southern Java and dominant thrusting along the Sunda–Java Trench, with additional frontal and back-arc thrusts across the island. Gravity analysis using the Radially Averaged Power Spectrum (RAPS) method separates regional and residual anomalies, identifying dense lithospheric zones beneath the subduction front, low anomalies in sedimentary basins, and high anomalies over volcanic regions. A pronounced density contrast in northern Java delineates the Java Back-Arc Thrust. Forward modeling of Bouguer anomalies refines the subduction geometry of the Indo-Australian Plate, which initiates at ~11 km depth and descends northward to ~100 km, with Moho depths ranging from 11 to 40 km. Seismic reflection profiles distinguish frontal, back-arc, and strike-slip faults, reflecting complex crustal deformation. These integrated results provide new insights into subduction dynamics, plate reconfiguration, and seismic hazards along the Java and southern Sunda margins.
