Comparison of The Erosion Prediction Models from USLE, MUSLE and RUSLE in Poleang River Basin

Abstract

Water erosion is a serious global problem due to land degradation, including in Indonesia. This phenomenon has been exacerbated by climate change and anthropogenic interventions into the natural environment in recent decades. Although empirical modeling is a viable approach for predicting soil degradation, its implementation across extensive, ungauged areas is often hindered by data scarcity and inconsistency. This research evaluates and contrasts the efficiency of three USLE-based frameworks in quantifying water-induced erosion within the Poleang River Basin. The specific erosion estimates obtained across the Poleang River Basin surface are 252 t/ha-1/year-1, 210 t/ha-1/year-1, and 230 t/ha-1/year-1, respectively. These three models produced relatively similar estimates, with R2 values ranging from 91% to 99%. Notably, the USLE model exhibited a broader spatial heterogeneity in risk distribution compared to the MUSLE and RUSLE counterparts. In this context, the canopy cover factor emerged as a more decisive parameter in accounting for elevated erosion rates within the study area.
