Encyclopaedia Britannica is not a Reliable Rource of Information on Cartographic Projections
Keywords:
Encyclopaedia Britannica, map projectionsAbstract
Encyclopaedia Britannica / Britannica has been published since 1768. Since 2016, it has been published exclusively as an online encyclopedia. From 2023 to the present (April 2026), we have tested the knowledge of artificial intelligence about map projections in a dozen texts. We tested ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity. We found that their knowledge of map projections is very poor. We are therefore interested in how reliable a source of information about map projections is today Britannica, compared to artificial intelligence. We have extracted several excerpts from an extensive text about map projections and found that even Britannica cannot be considered a reliable source of information about map projections.
