About the Journal

The Cartography and Geoinformation (KiG) journal publishes scientific and professional papers in cartography and other scientific fields (geography, geodesy, geology, forestry, agronomy, history, architecture, education ...) if they are related to cartography and geoinformation. Cartography and Geoinformation is an open access diamond journal.

Cartography and Geoinformation is published by the Croatian Cartographic Society twice a year, in Croatian and English. All published articles are available for free on Hrčak (https://hrcak.srce.hr/kig).

Users are free to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the material, and to modify, transform, and adapt the material or use it in other lawful ways, as long as they appropriately cite the source, in accordance with the CC BY-SA license.

Manuscripts should be submitted to the Editorial Board via the link https://hrcak.srce.hr/ojs/index.php/kig

Papers that bring new knowledge about cartography and geoinformation will be published, regardless of whether they involve the application of the latest discoveries and modern technologies or historical research.

Printed issues of the Cartography and Geoinformation are published semi-annually, in June and December, in Croatian and English. The journal uses the “online first” publishing system, which means that papers are posted on the Hrčak website after review and proofreading, and before graphic design. The final version is posted after the layout is created. It takes approximately four to eight months from submission to publication in print.

Types of papers

The journal publishes only unpublished scientific and professional papers that may not be offered to another publisher at the same time and in the same form. The journal also publishes reviews, news, announcements and other contributions that serve to popularize cartography and geoinformation.

An original scientific paper contains unpublished results of original scientific research, and the scientific information is presented in such a way that the accuracy of the analyses and extracts on which the results are based can be verified.

A preliminary communication is a scientific paper that contains one or more new scientific data whose nature requires urgent publication. It does not necessarily have to have sufficient details to repeat and verify the results.

A review paper is a scientific paper that contains an original, concise and critical overview of the field in which the author is actively working. The role of the author's original contribution in that field must be emphasized with respect to already published works and a review of these works must be given.

A professional paper contains useful contributions from the field of expertise that are not related to the author's original research, and the observations presented do not have to be new in the field.

Editorial Policy

The Editorial Board accepts manuscripts throughout the year.

After reading the received scientific or professional paper, the Editorial Board: (1) immediately forwards the paper for review; (2) returns the paper to the authors with suggestions for revision; (3) returns the paper to the authors with an explanation of the decision not to publish the paper in the journal. The final decision on the type of paper and its publication is made by the Editorial Board based on the conclusions of the reviewers and the importance of the paper's content for the journal.

Review process

All manuscripts are first evaluated by the editor-in-chief (and/or members of the editorial board) and may be rejected without review if it is concluded that they do not contain elements of a scientific paper, that they are not thematically within the scope of the journal, or that they are not sufficiently original. Based on their opinion, the paper is rejected or sent for further review. Before review, each manuscript is run through plagiarism detection software to check for originality and ensure the quality of the written work. Authors should be careful not to exceed the 20% overlap limit with published papers. Papers with a high degree of overlap with published data (even in the case of self-plagiarism) will be rejected without review.

Scientific and professional papers are reviewed by at least two reviewers, at least one of whom is from abroad. Reviewers are active experts, generally with a doctorate in science, who are engaged in the field of research that is the content of the paper proposed for publication. The list of reviewers is published in the journal once a year.

After review

If the reviews are positive, authors are expected to submit a revised version within the time frame specified by the system. If authors are unable to submit a revised manuscript within this period, they should contact the Executive Editor regarding the possibility of extending the resubmission deadline after all changes requested by the reviewers have been implemented. Authors are required to submit a supporting document with responses to each reviewer’s individual comments with each revised version. If authorship has changed during the review (addition or removal of authors), authors are required to explain the reason for the change, and all authors (including those removed/added) must provide written consent for the change. Authors added during the evaluation process must also submit a completed and signed Authorship Statement. The revised version is evaluated by the editor and/or reviewers, and based on their suggestions, the Editor-in-Chief makes a final acceptance decision as soon as possible. If necessary, further revision may be requested to meet all reviewer requests. When the manuscript is accepted for publication, it is assigned a DOI number and proofread and edited. After that, the authors check the manuscript, and it is then published online first as the first version of the paper. After that, authorial changes to the manuscript are not possible. When all articles for that issue are collected, the authors receive a draft of the paper in pdf for final review before printing. The author is expected to correct primarily typographical errors with proofreading, not content. The draft must be returned to the editorial office within 72 hours. The final version is then sent to print, and all manuscripts are published online as pdf files in their final form and indexed in databases.

The editorial office reserves the usual right to make minor changes to the text, editing, and graphic attachments.

Inclusiveness

Inclusive writing acknowledges diversity, expresses respect for all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities. The content of the paper should not make any assumptions about the beliefs or commitments of any reader; it should not contain anything that might imply that one person is superior to another on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability, or health status. Inclusive language should be used throughout the paper. Writing should be free from bias, stereotypes, jargon, references to the dominant culture, and/or cultural assumptions. We recommend avoiding the use of terms that refer to personal information such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability, or health status unless they are relevant and valid.

Borders and Territories

Potential disputes over borders and territories may have particular relevance for authors in describing their research or in an author or editor correspondence address and should be respected. Content decisions are an editorial matter and where there is a potential or perceived dispute or complaint, the editorial team will attempt to find a resolution that satisfies parties involved.
