Abstract

The closure of underground mining operations has created underground voids, potentially available for alternative uses. Repurposing of abandoned mines plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of the mining industry. Systematization of international practices for the use of mined-out spaces has allowed us to identify key functional classes: research, energy, infrastructure-industrial, and social-recreational. This article examines the potential for repurposing excavated spaces in ore mines for the creation of underground facilities and develops a classification of their use based on functional purpose, depth, type of mine workings, degree of development, and economic factors. The developed classification is based on five criteria: functional purpose, depth, type of mine working, degree of development of the mined-out space, and an integrated assessment using the hierarchy process. Energy, security, and logistics facilities are given the highest priority, while recreational facilities are considered less promising due to high safety costs. The classification is developed as a matrix, enabling a rapid assessment of the suitability of specific levels or mines. The research revealed an exponential relationship between the maximum and minimum depths of mine installations and the method of use (the complexity of the function): simpler functions (urban, agricultural, and recreational) are implemented at shallow depths (30-150 m), while medium depths (150-500 m) are typical for cultural, social, tourist, and military facilities, and maximum depths (>1000 m) are used for energy systems, scientific laboratories, and radioactive waste storage facilities. The resulting models serve as a predictive tool for assessing types of underground infrastructure.
