About the Journal
ABOUT THE JOURNAL
The Croatian Journal of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine (CJAIM) is a peer-reviewed, open-access medical journal publishing original research, reviews, case reports, editorials, and letters to the editor in anaesthesiology, intensive care medicine, perioperative medicine, pain medicine, emergency medicine, and related fields. The journal serves clinicians, researchers, and trainees, with particular attention to Central and Southeastern Europe, as a platform for high-quality clinical and translational work.
FOCUS AND SCOPE
CJAIM publishes original research articles, review articles, case reports, editorials, and letters to the editor in areas including, but not limited to:
• Anaesthesiology
• Intensive care medicine
• Perioperative medicine
• Pain medicine (acute and chronic)
• Regional anaesthesia
• Critical care medicine
• Cardiac anaesthesia
• Neuroanaesthesia
• Paediatric anaesthesia
OPEN ACCESS POLICY
CJAIM is a fully open-access journal operating under a diamond (platinum) open access model: all articles are freely available online immediately upon publication, and users may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts without charge to the user or institution.
There are no article processing charges (APCs), no submission fees, no page charges, no colour figure charges, and no fees for rejected manuscripts. The journal is funded by the Association “Anestezija” through membership fees, grants, and voluntary contributions.
COPYRIGHT AND LICENSING
Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). Authors retain copyright; others may distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, provided appropriate credit is given. Upon acceptance, authors are required to sign an Author Agreement (licence to publish) granting the journal an exclusive licence to publish the article.
PEER REVIEW
CJAIM uses different review pathways by article type (see the journal’s Editorial Policy for detail):
• Original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and narrative reviews: double-blind external peer review with at least two independent expert reviewers.
• Case reports: external peer review, typically one–two reviewers.
• Editorials and invited commentaries: editorial review only (not independent double-blind external review); such items are labelled so readers can distinguish them from externally peer-reviewed research.
• Letters to the editor: editorial review (and, where appropriate, response from the authors of the original article).
Overall, the review process for externally reviewed manuscripts typically takes about 8–12 weeks, subject to reviewer availability.
PUBLICATION ETHICS AND INTEGRITY
CJAIM is committed to high standards of publication ethics and aligns with international guidance, including COPE, ICMJE, and WAME, and the Declaration of Helsinki (current revision) for research involving human subjects.
Submissions are screened for similarity and AI usage by QuillBot premium. Authors must disclose conflicts of interest and, where applicable, ethics approval and funding. Use of generative AI is permitted only in line with the journal’s policy (disclosure required; AI tools cannot be listed as authors).
USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
CJAIM treats artificial intelligence as a tool that may support research and writing when used transparently and with full human accountability. AI tools cannot be listed as authors (COPE, ICMJE). Authors remain responsible for the accuracy of all content, including clinical detail, dosages, guidelines, and references, whether or not AI was used.
Disclosure (tiered)
• Linguistic support only (grammar, style, translation, polishing): treated as a normal editing aid; no separate disclosure is required.
• Research support (e.g. literature summarisation, brainstorming, structural outlining): acknowledge the tool in the Acknowledgments.
• Methodological use of AI (e.g. data analysis, coding, pattern detection in data): mandatory disclosure in Methods, including tool name and version; authors should be prepared to share prompts (e.g. in supplementary material or on request). No un-anonymised patient data may be uploaded to public or non-secure AI services.
Peer review
Authors may use AI to check manuscripts against reporting checklists before submission. The editorial office may use tools to support integrity checks; acceptance or rejection decisions remain human editorial decisions.
Where Tier 2 or Tier 3 tools were used, authors should include a short declaration at the end of the manuscript (see full AI policy on the journal website for the recommended wording).
ORCID
The corresponding author must provide an ORCID iD at submission; co-authors are strongly encouraged to include ORCID iDs.
PUBLICATION FREQUENCY
Biannually (two issues per year).
